Research Overview

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the Twelve S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino acid mitochondria-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S ribosomal RNA gene of the mitochondrial genome. Unlike nuclear-encoded peptides, MOTS-c is translated from a small open reading frame within mitochondrial DNA. Biochemically, MOTS-c has been shown in research models to translocate to the nucleus under metabolic stress conditions, where it interacts with the AMPK signaling pathway and modulates nuclear gene expression related to cellular metabolic homeostasis. Researchers study MOTS-c as a molecular tool to investigate metabolic signaling pathways, including glucose utilization, insulin signaling pathways, and mitochondrial function. Current areas of biochemical investigation include its interaction with folate cycle intermediates and its capacity to modulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) dynamics in cell-culture models. MOTS-c is supplied as a lyophilized research material for laboratory in vitro and analytical use only.
