Research Overview

Selank (Thr-Pro-Asp-Cys-Pro-His-Pro-Gly-Pro-Gly-Glu-Leu-Leu) is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of the endogenous human tetrapeptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), extended with the sequence Pro-Gly-Pro to enhance metabolic stability. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Researchers study Selank due to its interaction with the GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems, as well as its observed modulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression. It has also been investigated for its influence on the enkephalin-degrading enzyme system. Current areas of biochemical investigation include its effects on cytokine regulation, particularly interleukins IL-6 and IL-4, in cell-culture and animal-model studies. Selank is supplied as a lyophilized research material for laboratory in vitro and analytical use only.
