Research Overview

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) fragment 4-7, with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. Originally developed in Russia, it was designed to retain the neurological activity of ACTH while eliminating its endocrine effects. Researchers study Semax primarily due to its interactions with the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling pathway, as studies suggest it modulates BDNF and its receptor TrkB in neuronal tissues. Additionally, Semax has been observed to interact with dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems in preclinical models. Its resistance to enzymatic degradation, attributed to the C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide extension, makes it a useful research tool for studying peptidergic modulation of neurological processes in vitro and in animal models.
